Intermittently, and in amongst a sea of humdrum peers, an unfamiliar name will announce themselves onto the underground scene with extra-ordinary talent.
Melbourne’s Charles Oliver exemplifies such a case and it’s a testament to the developing reputation of Compatible Music that it’s his chosen home for a remarkable debut EP.
Title track “Heights” delves into Oliver’s penchant for meditative story-telling, carefully crafted around a bed of breakbeats. These lay exemplary foundation to stunningly emotive, ambient melodies that circulate with glorious exploratory freedom.
Dancefloor focus is firmly established with following stomper “Restrain”. This track illustrates the Australian’s diversity with a bass and percussive-led vibe. Oliver’s patently hypnotic preferences remain acutely evident, however, expertly bonding the range of tracks into a cohesive whole.
The extended player reaches its penultimate phase with “Storms”, a progressive builder that has an epic, emotive vibe throughout and is sure to find favour across a plethora of dancefloors.
The “Heights EP” is concluded in inimitable fashion as “Alter Eye” is thrust upon us. The hypnotic theme prevails once more, a powerhouse with huge atmospherics amidst a droning, fizzing bassline and driving percussion.
A serious conclusion to an offering and artist of whom we are mightily pleased to have welcomed to the Compatible family.
Please enjoy.
